"The most satisfying part of being a tax specialist is seeing the tangible results when a complex tax plan comes to fruition. Being able to identify issues and opportunities, navigate through the tax legislation, and ultimately come up with a plan that will save someone thousands (or tens of thousands, or hundreds of thousands) of dollars, really makes what I do worthwhile.”
Ben began his career in accounting and at Wilkinson as a co-op student through Carleton University working terms through both the 2005 and 2006 “tax season”. In 2007, Ben graduated the Bachelor of Commerce program at Carleton with High Honours, and began working full-time at Wilkinson in May of that year. By 2008, Ben had successfully obtained his CA designation.
Through the years Ben has experienced a wide-breadth of clients with accounting and assurance needs, but ultimately found that the tax engagements were the most satisfying. “In our world, tax factors into every equation, and it can sometimes prove to be a challenge to navigate” says Ben. “That’s why I felt it was so important to expand my knowledge in this area – yes it can be the most challenging, but it can also be the most rewarding. Not just for me, but for our clients as well”. In 2013, Ben completed the “In-Depth Tax Course”, a program that spans over two years and involves a significant commitment to develop techniques to understand and interpret tax legislation and practically apply those skills to solve complex tax matters.
As a manager, Ben uses his abilities not only to assist clients, but to expand tax knowledge within our firm and our community. Ben actively participates in providing internal training and mentoring in the area of tax within our firm, and works with our tax department to provide seminars to the community to increase awareness of tax developments that may impact individuals and businesses.
