Client Update – CRA Strikes During Tax Season!

Effective April 19th employees of the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) have taken strike action, less than two weeks before the personal tax filing deadline for most Canadians. Please be aware that the CRA has indicated that they do not intend to extend the filing or payment deadlines for tax returns beyond the current May 1st deadline, or the June 15th filing deadline for self-employed individuals. As such, if you have not already done so please be sure to bring in your tax information as soon as possible and arrange to sign your forms when we contact you.

The CRA has indicated that access to online services will remain available during the strike, but there may be increased wait times for call centres. Delays are also possible for processing income tax and benefit returns.  As a result, it may take longer to receive tax refunds or assessments.

We understand that the CRA will prioritize the payment and processing of benefit payments such as the Canada Child Benefit and GST credit.

The timing of this labour action right at the end of tax season may present some challenges, however, we will be available to guide you through them.

If you have any questions concerning the above, do not hesitate to contact your trusted advisor at Wilkinson & Company LLP.
