“I have been in this business for 35 years now and it’s been a very rewarding career. Dealing with a client and seeing them through those early days of struggle to their present position as one of the best companies in town – that’s where the real satisfaction comes in.”
Don is a Certified General Accountant and began his accounting career 35 years ago. He was working at the firm of Shurtleff & Savage in Kingston when it was acquired by Wilkinson in 2001. This acquisition allowed Wilkinson to expand into the Kingston region and offered Don’s Shurtleff & Savage clients access to the highly regarded technical services and expertise of Wilkinson. Don is one of the Kingston office’s Assurance Managers. He regularly reviews financial statements for other staff members, manages his client files and focuses on tax and succession planning.
A major theme of Don’s career has been continuity. “I have dealt with a lot of my clients for 35 years, so I have been able to watch their progress. They are now in a period of transitioning from being owners of active businesses, to selling to third parties or transferring their businesses on to their children. It has been very rewarding to work with and chart their success from the very beginning.”
Don has seen many changes over the years as the accounting field continues to become more complex. His extensive experience in the industry gives him the ability to weather these changes and use them to the benefit of his clients. As he points out, he’s seen just about everything during his career. Only time can deliver this kind of invaluable knowledge and Don enjoys sharing some of his hard earned expertise with the next generation of accountants so they too can build lasting relationships with their clients.
